Book Fair & Art Fete

On 29 March 2011, the Islamic Awareness society organized the Islamic book fair on the 100 garden.

It was initially planned that the book fair would be held for two days but due to a holiday being announced on 30 March it was cancelled. The following stalls were set up: the calligraphy stall, Haya’s paintings and scarves, Art Fete, Tehreem Rajani’s Jewelry stall, Mujtaba Haider’s (Quran and authentic publications) Stall, Flowers of Islam, Hiba Magazine and Dawah books.

The Art Fete was a stall that displayed paintings and sketches related to verses of the holy Quran. A small competition was arranged for those visiting the stall, the students were ask to write why they wanted a certain painting and then if their comment won then they would win the painting they had posted a comment on.

The students also had the choice to buy the painting and the proceeds from this stall went for charity. From this stall 3 paintings were won by the students and the 3 were sold. There were seven paintings. The response from the students was good and many who visited the stalls did find something they were interested to buy, some had a hard time making up their mind so they had planned to visit the stall on the second day but due to the World cup final, the stalls could not be set up on the second day.

It is felt that such an event should be an annual feature in the events organized by the IAS so that students who are looking for authentic Islamic literature be provided with an outlet to do so inside the university campus. This way they can also be guided as to which authors and publishers they should choose when buying Islamic literature.

I believe had it gone for the second day (minus the world cup :P), it would have further been a roaring success… because while I was “shopping” there, I overheard so many people who were thinking of bringing money the next day… but, that’s alright, next time inshaAllah 🙂
